This is not about the cat. The cat is not the thing on the cover about which I've chosen to blog today. I know that the cat is TOTALLY FREAKY!, and kinda glows, and I know that I'm gonna see those eyes in MY FUCKING NIGHTMARES, but this is not about the cat.
This is about the M.C. Esheresque Stonehenge that's in the background. That thing cannot possibly exist if we're operating inside the laws of physics. Learn some perspective!
Okay, you caught me. This is totally about the cat.

Love the blurb... "one of the most popular authors of our time". He's not any good, but hey, he's popular.
Whaaa-? How did they get a picture of my cat?!?

Makes me so glad I'm a dog person.
Kitty!
It looks weird, but it is not an impossible configuration. The right column is not vertical: it's angled and shorter than the left column. It's a sort of "pi" shape with a shorter right leg, due to the ground not being flat neither.
That is one ugly catbeast.
Just to illuminate, Andre Norton was a woman.
Wikipedia :
Andre Alice Norton, née Alice Mary Norton (b. February 17, 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio – d. March 17, 2005)
She was very prolific and I loved a lot of her books when I was a teen. She was a groundbreaker author whit loads of women who owe their writing careers to her.
But it's called "The Gate of the Cat" and cat's are completely strange and bizarre. Trust me, I live with three of them. So, see, it all makes sense.
Your commentary is always so entertaining to read. I am bestowing great honor on you at Retrospace. Check it out here when you get a chance.
I'm more concerned with why the cat seems to not only be glowing but also seems to be lit by an entirely different light source to the entire rest of the cover.
By the way, very amused by your description.
When the moon in the sky
Shines its light on the Pi
That's Amore!
Maybe the gates are trying to walk?
