Because I love you.

Got this e-mail just now which said, simply, "Holyshitfuckdamnballsawesome!" Well, I had to go to that link, right??

Thanks, Rima! (As she said: "That's right. Nazi dwarfs with whips. You're welcome.") And thank you, Bookdwarf!

p.s. lost my 'berry job. Am not feelin' the funneh. Will try to persist for the sake of you, my beautiful fans! I love you guys!!!

Sorry about the job. Can we donate to keep this lovely blog going?

Maughta said...

Thanks, WA. While I do have a donate doohickey for my paypal whatchamacallit, I'm certainly not solicitating funds. I shall overcome!

Jean said...

Wow. That is quite a cover! Is it the same John Christopher as wrote the Tripod novels??

Sorry about the job--I feel your pain as a fellow laid-off librarian.

Trying again:

Dude. This book is still in print. Though sadly not with the amazing cover.

Almost as odd as one of Katherine Kurtz' books, "Dagger Magic"

Undead Nazis -- in a submarine.

If this doesn't make anyone's day then I don't know what will. This is perhaps the coolest thing I have seen today, wait, yes it is.
Thanks you for providing this amazing service.
I post a few covers on my site, but nothing every captures this sort of awesomeness!

That's horrible news. Libraries are really in trouble right now, and I wish all those politicians with libraries in their sights would wake up and see that we need libraries now more than ever. Sorry for preaching to the choir.

On the bright side, it could be worse. You could be stuck in a castle with Nazi dwarfs with whips.

I love that the cover of this books has a quote from the NY Times which reads "CAREFULLY LAID-ON HORROR"

So sorry about the library job. Sucks that they cut the libraries and the schools first. :(

But, suffice it to say I do love this site. Glad you are trying to keep going with it.

Oh. My. Gods.

Thanks, and best of luck with the job search! That really sucks.

Jean,
The cover may have changed, but I notice they still have the same review quote on the front!

sorry about the job. I got into 'berryship because I thought it was bulletproof, but I met someone else yesterday who's getting laid off(or repositoned for much less $$). anyway, good luck.

Saw this post mentioned on SF Signal and knew exactly which book it discussed from "They speak German and they carry whips"!! The Little People's actually a pretty good horror novel, but not half as much fun as this cover! (And absolutely nothing like it, of course!) I've got the same edition, cheers me up every time I look at it.

Plug:
Interview with John Christopher (aka Sam Youd) and an article on his work here: www.colinbrockhurst.co.uk.
Ithankyou.

"Holyshitfuckdamnballsawesome!" is exactly how I'd describe the cover of this book too. Nothing about it suggests the "terror" that the author and publisher would like one to imagine. Great find!

I'm sorry about the job too -- it is really teh suck for libraries and funding right now :(

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your job. I hope everything works out for you.

This cover wins!

I dunno if "Carefully laid-on horror" fits though (but I haven't read the book now have I).

That's just so hysterically funny. I love the armband. Just like a leprechaun with a whip ain't enough to run from...

I just started reading your blog a week ago. I'm sorry about your job. That cover it crazy. Please continue to find books with weird covers.

Droplet said...

For the unlibrarianified, and not proud of it, what is 'berryship? Is it a Newberry thing? Urban Dictionary has failed me. Probably because your breed doesn't have enough prison tats.

Whatever it is, it's a freaking job and I'm sorry you lost it. We'll get better!

Maughta said...

Sorry for the confusion, Droplet. 'Berry is short of Lieberry, which is how some people (including an old supervisor...at the job before this one) pronouce library. What is it about middle 'r's? It's the same with February. *sigh*

Ms Avery said...

*cackle* That is one dumbass cover. Amazing how much classier the new edition looks -- although that building looks anything but Irish.

Maughta, so sorry about the job. That sucks :(

Sooooo sorry to hear about that! That sucks!!! Best of luck in whatever you decide to do now.

(BTW, I think the above Chinese post is spam. The same words are repeated too often.)

I swear I read this book once. There is something eerily familiar about it.

So sorry about your job. When I win the lottery (planning for this Saturday) I will hire you to create and run a private library that only cool people are allowed in. You can make all the rules, and post them wherever you want.

WHAT THE HELL!? Nazi gnomes? That is insane.

Lindsay said...

Good luck Miss Maughta! I am but a lowly circulation assistant, unworthy to untie the sandals of your mad liberrian skillz, but I do hope you will persevere in these trying times.

Oh, and the blog? Absolutely faboo. I've been reading for forever and I don't think I've ever commented before (probably because of my tendency to say goofy things such as the first part ^_^) You inspired my boyfriend and I to collect books with terrible covers. It's rather like shooting fish in a barrel on the sci-fi side of things...

jane dough said...

It is the same J.Christopher of the tripod series. And I am so sorry about your job!
I agree with Lindsay - this is a fantaabulous blog. There is a reason why there are so many scifi covers here . . .

Oh, I'm sorry. I just got back from vacation to find that I did in fact get a contract, about a month late. Lost our acquisitions librarian though, since they cut one position and we can't buy books anyway. Yeah.

I love the blog and I hope you can find a new job very soon. :(

Kat said...

I'm so sorry about the job. I think this blog is amazing and I really appreciate the work you put into it.

My husband just lost his job, and my hours got cut, so your blog is keeping us amused throughout our stress.

JamiSings said...

I'm sorry. I wish I could say something comforting or witty to make you smile, but I'm not good at that sort of thing. So I'll just repeat, I'm sorry.

I decided to read this book. I have to say it's really - boring. I guess I expected something like that movie "Dolls" - mini-killers full of bloodlust ripping people to shreds. But it's mostly just talk and no torture until near the end of the book. And even then it's anti-climatic. You'd think at the very least the married couple consisting of an Ex-Nazi soilder and his Jewish wife would be torn to pieces, but aren't.

Sorry about giving any spoilers there, but the book's so old I'm sure it's spoiled all over the place anyway. Surprised I couldn't find a Wikipedia article on it.
