Not so subtle

I don't know if you've caught an episode of Sesame Street lately, but apparently Cookie Monster is being morphed into a fruit and veggie eating monster. His new slogan is "Cookies are a sometimes food." WTF? Seriously? Cookies are an anytime food!!!! Screw veggies!

Apparently to help make the point, Cookie Monster is now being drawn as morbidly obese in order to drill home to kids that fruit is better than cookies.

Heresy!

In Cookie Monster's defense, when initially confronted with the "sometimes food" concept, he responded by saying "NOW is sometime!" and eating a ton of cookies. Since then, the guy eats everything. Fruit, veggies, bread, meat, AND ESPECIALLY cookies. He never turns cookies down. They still drive him crazy like a drug addict. That one short where Hoot The Owl sang the "sometimes food" song to him gives Cookie a bad rap.

I'm all for healthy eating, but kids (and furry blue monsters) that are deprived of cookies are going to turn into adults with eating disorders. Let them eat cookies!

Cookie Monster has always been a well-built boy. However, I do think to make him eat fruits and veggies will take away from the fun of Cookie Monster! It's all well and good to advocate healthy eating, but when I was a little kid, I knew enough to know that while nonstop cookies were good for fuzzy blue monsters, humans needed real food too. I think that was the point of Cookie Monster...Cookies are nice but they can't be all you eat!

Now they're just shoving it down kids' throats (pun intended) and it's going to make the kids rebel. It's not only poor little Cookie Monster screaming "ME WANT COOKIE!" nowadays...

I thought it was grand heresy when I first heard about it, prior to having kids. Now that I have kids and have actually seen how it's handled on the show, I approve. It's not rammed down anyone's throats, and Cookie Monster still loves to gobble cookies. But kids' ideas of healthy eating are supported by what they see on the show. This is a good thing.

I wait with baited breath as Sesame Street gears up to explore Cookie Monster's laparoscopic surgery adventure!

Heresy indeed – Cookies are always food! I’ll admit that I haven’t watched the show in years, but I was a viewer during his prime cookie pushing years and I didn’t have any problem finishing my veggies. I suppose it’s just more PC to make him a lardo now.

I may bake a large batch of cookies in protest at this.

I knew Elmo - that helium-voiced flack - was pushing the "sometimes food" concept (an Elmo DVD was passed out on the WIC program) but Cookie Monster too? He's supposed to be an unrepentant cookie eater!

Why not just bake vegetables into cookies and eat that? Then everyone's happy!

When it comes to PC, I usually share the point of view of the "Preacher" character (the comic book). Then of course, it should be better to give "positive messages" to children, but...

Actually I like SS's Suggestion.
