Dinner will be a bit late this evening....

It's that time of year again. Time to pack up the kids into the station wagon (or minivan for you yuppies) and set out on the open road for a long adventure, replete with the sounds of summer: "Are we there yet?" "He's touching me!" and the ever popular "I have to pee." This year, instead of stopping at questionably clean diners in the middle of nowhere, why not try cooking out with the family? This handy guide will make it a breeze to cook just about anywhere! Just think -- not only are you saving money by not having to tip that creepy waitress with the two teeth and the vericose veins mimicking an interstate highway map, but you'll be saving the world by using an already-existing heat source to cook your cuisine.

And for those of you who prefer to have even less impact on the environment, you can make sure you leave no morsel along the side of the road. Accidentally hit a skunk while reaching into the back seat to change the DVD? No problem! Throw it in the cooler and then throw it on your car engine when it's time for dinner!

And for those of you who, like me, prefer to travel on two wheels instead of four, there's the age-old question of what to do with all the bugs that get caught in your teeth. This book answers that question. I know for a fact that a Harley engine gets hot enough to fry an egg on (bump the pipes one time with a bare leg and you'll never question that again!), so you don't even need a car for this cuisine!

Enjoy!!

LOL Kat, I was just going to say a similar thing! Except I was eating oatmeal cookies...

Guess it's just a bad idea to troll the blogs while eating.

I just can't help but adding to your list a cookbook entitled Natural Harvest by Paul Photenhauer. The main ingredient of this cookbook would certainly be easy to find no matter where this year's summer travels might take you.

I actually knew a woman who grew up so poor that her family had to be creative with preparing road kill...*shudder.* BUT for there to be a cookbook for such things? Yikes.

Years ago, there was a technician where I worked who always "shared" lunches. He always had breaded and deep fried pieces of meat in a sandwich. (think foreshadowing right now)... The other techs who traded didn't think anything much was unusual. Then one day, he needed a ride home and as his coworker was driving down a country lane, he yelled at the guy to stop, jumped out, picked up a dead groundhog and put it in the bed of the coworker's pickup truck. No one ever shared a lunch with him again.

A friend sent me a link to the Natural Harvest book... ugh. The reviews/testimonials were enough to make me rethink every bake sale I'd ever attended.

In college I had a swim coach who was hoping we'd hit a deer with out charter bus so he could strap it on the back and take it home with him. Not the same as a day+ old, possibly unidentifiable animal, but a bit odd all the same.

Those books don´t exist!!! They can´t be real!!!

I've been told that wrapping fish in foil and putting it on your engine is actually a pretty good way to bake it. It makes sense for picnics and road trips I guess.

Oh wow- are those books real?! I love the last one about how to eat a bug. The book cover sums it up pretty well.

Here's another great article about designing book covers: http://insite.artinstitutes.edu/designing-the-look-on-the-cover-of-books-24098.aspx. Check it out if you get a chance!

I wonder how many miles of driving it would take to make Clutch-Free Coffee Cake, U-Joint Almond Brie, Chug Chug Chili and Blow Out Brownies.

I'd love to read those books for their originality, but eating insects or accidentally killed animals? No way! :-)
