I've read those books. They're not much better inside. I'd leave it at that, but you must know what this book is about to get why the cover is so, so wrong.
Young, high school girl Momo (pictured on the cover) tans easily, so most of her friends think she is a playgirl. Her false friend Sae spreads nasty rumors about her, which make the school's actual playboy, Kairi, beconme interested in her. Sexually suggestive hijinks ensue.
Having actually (out of curiosity) perused a Peach Girl book, I would say the cover featuring what appears to be a woman disguised as a sex toy is sadly very appropriate for these books.
On the inside, it's a pretty good manga about colorism in Japan (before it devolves into love-triangle hijinks...) One of the less-silly shoujo mangas I've encountered. But I prefer her black and white art.
The "Peach Girl" series probably has the most porn-y covers out of the young adult mangas that I've seen, but I'm sure there are worse. I'm surprised by how many books that are marketed for teen girls have such suggestive covers. I was just re-adding a copy of Maureen Johnson's "Girl at Sea" and couldn't help but notice that a book for teen girls has a teen girl wearing a see-thru tank over a black bikini top and little short shorts. Interestingly enough, the paperback edition has a different design with jeans and a non-see-thru tank. *jumps off prudy sounding soapbox*
W...owwww. Not just a Real Doll, but a teenage Ganguro Real Doll. Oh, manga, you never cease to bring the frighteningly oversexualized little girls.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to go hide now. That thing looks like it might suck my face off.
that IS frightening. she totally looks like one of those blow up sex dolls.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the wide, wide world of manga, dear.
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is that thing in her mouth? A vibrating ring?
ReplyDeleteNo, I assure you, it really does look like a sex toy. Eeewww. :P
