Just what, exactly, is Judge a Book by its Cover?
I worked in a public library. I saw literally thousands of books every week; the good, the bad, and the truly hideous. These are the covers from the latter category. Joining me (Maughta) is the ever-popular pinch hitter (and handy husband) DocTurtle.

That is awful!! (But I did get a good laugh).

Yeah, that's just creepy.
But is it categorized as a horror novel? Or is it supposed to be non-creepy?
*shivers* That's a creeeepy cover all right.
I don't see the words thriller or horror anywhere on the cover, which makes me think it's not intentionally creepy. Surely, someone at the publishing house had to look at this before it was printed and think there was something very disturbing about this artwork.

Those dolls look just like one I had as a child! I carried her everywhere, and her eyes opened and closed, depending on whether or not she was laying down. If those dolls ever try to take over the world, keep in mind they're allergic to red fruit punch!
If it were a poster for a horror film, I know I'd want to see it. That's got to be one of the creepiest covers ever.
But what are they doing with their hands? I notice that one library copy is conveniently "lost"
I wish I were joking, but these dolls figured prominantly in my disturbing dream last night. Yeesh. I think I need to take up drinking before bed.
I don't know if it's horror so much as incest or doll rape. The one on the left looks antagonistic and predatory, and the one on the right looks submissive. Or maybe the one on the right looks like the "brains" and the left looks like the idiot who follows orders. that's the way it is with dolls; they can be whatever you want. Unless they're the Black Canary Barbie doll; then they're bad, bad, bad girls.
The general synopsis at Alibris says that the book is about twin sisters, one of whom was born unable to feel physical pain. Since she can't feel anything when she's injured, she gets bruised and hurt a lot--hence the need for "The Soft Room" of the title. She's eventually forced by economic necessity into being a paid test subject for medical research. The best part of the synopsis, though, is where the book is called a "subtly blaring novel." Which is supposed to be a good thing, I guess.

A bit off topic...I have NEVER understood why some publishers feel the need to put "a novel" in the cover design of novels. It's not like the average reader with half a brain can't tell.

Laughing out loud before I even read a single word of commentary. That is the movie poster for a lost, excellent horror movie. Or should be.
